Infection Control Annual Statement 2018

This statement will normally be generated annually in September and will summarise:

  • Any infection transmission incidents and any action taken (incidents are also reported in accordance with the practice infection control policy and significant event procedures).
  • Details of any infection control audits undertaken and any subsequent actions taken as a result.
  • Details of any infection control risk assessment undertaken and any subsequent actions as a result.
  • Any review and update of policies, procedures and guidelines.

Within the past 12 months two confirmed cases of community acquired clostridium difficile, both cases were reviewed in line with local policy.


During the year we twice found evidence of drug taking in the patient toilet, the toilet is now locked and patients ask for the key from reception.  Staff on duty check the toilet regularly during the day.

Annual infection control training is carried out in-house.  In addition his year admin staff attended external training provided by NewcastleGateshead CCG in July 2018.

Clinical Staff have completed IF handbook assessments throughout 2018.


The following are in use at the practice and are reviewed annually.

  • Personal protective equipment
  • Safe disposal of sharps
  • Clinical waste
  • Aseptic technique
  • Management Plan for needle stick injury and exposure to blood and bodily fluid

St Anthony's Health Centre Cleaning Schedule – reviewed Sept 2018

An independent contractor is used to provide cleaning to both clinical and non-clinical areas.  We regularly audit the standard of their work.  The same company monitor the water temperature in line with recommendations for legionella assessments.
Curtains around couches are replaced every 12months (disposable curtains).

Baby Change supplies are kept at reception 

The changing mat is wiped after each use – using antimicrobial wipes.

Biohazard Box

Available at reception for use in event of blood/vomit or urine spills.
